Every year at about this point in the calendar in my plastic surgery practice, I notice certain trends that are happening, a shift in the type of body procedures and facial treatments patients are asking for. This year, I’m noticing that both men and women want to look fresher, healthier and more toned, but with a minimum of downtime and recovery.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, more than 300,000 breast augmentations were performed in the U.S. in 2018, making it the most popular cosmetic surgery. In general, most women — including the majority of my patients — are pleased with the fuller, shapelier, sexier silhouette they can achieve with breast implants.

Rethinking your decision

For decades, women have wanted larger, fuller breasts and have chosen breast implants as a safe, effective way to get them. These days, however, that trend is reversing in many cases. Women’s lifestyles are changing, as well as what our current culture considers to be attractive and desirable.

Today, smaller breasts that look more natural and realistic are becoming more popular. For this reason, many women are choosing to have breast revision surgery, either to have their breast implants removed or to replace them with a smaller size. When it comes to breast size, many people assume that women only want to go larger. However, in my plastic surgery practice many patients come to me wanting their breasts to be smaller. Very large breasts, especially on small-framed women, can cause a lot of physical discomfort: neck pain, back pain, indentions on the shoulders from heavy straps, skin rashes and problems with exercise.

Overly large breasts can also make it hard to find properly fitting clothing and bathing suits, and for many women, can make them uncomfortably self-conscious. If this sounds familiar to you, breast reduction surgery might be the welcome relief you’ve been looking for.

You may have read or heard in the news that the breast implant manufacturer Allergan has recalled its textured breast implants, here in the U.S. and around the world. A July 2019 statement from the FDA explains the recall:

To protect individuals from the increased risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), associated with Allergan BIOCELL textured breast implants, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requested that Allergan recall its BIOCELL textured breast implants and tissue expanders. Allergan agreed and is removing these products from the global market.

(FYI: BIA-ALCL is not breast cancer. It is a type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which is cancer of the immune system.)
