And during all that time, I have encountered very few complications in my patients as a result of this surgery. In the news: reports about the safety of breast implants 

Like many of my patients, you may have read or heard about the recently-released FDA reports of medical device performance, including breast implants. Here's my response:

I welcome the release of these reports and feel strongly that more transparency and information is better for both surgeons and patients to be able to make the most informed decisions.

Are breast implants safe? My answer is yes.

In over 20 years of performing breast implant surgery in my plastic surgery practice, I have encountered very few complications in my patients as a result. For women who want larger breasts, who want the size and shape of their breasts to match, or who have had a mastectomy and want breast reconstruction, breast implants are a highly satisfying, long-lasting solution. If you want larger breasts, I highly recommend breast implants as a safe, long-term way to get the breast size you’ve always wanted. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast implant surgery is the top cosmetic surgery performed today.

Having performed hundreds of breast implant surgeries, I know how much it means to each of my patients to achieve the results she wants, and I am pleased that I can help bring about these positive outcomes. I also recognize that there are a variety of reasons why women want larger breasts. For many of my patients, breast implants successfully help them feel younger, sexier, more attractive...and more feminine. For others, breast implants correct breast misalignment, breasts that never developed, the loss of breasts after surgery, or a number of other issues. In the last few days, I have heard from a few of my patients who read a recent article in The New York Times stating that breast implants made by Allergan that have a textured or slightly roughened surface, rather than a smooth covering, have been linked to a rare form of cancer called breast implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma and are being taken off the market in Europe. 

There has also been a recent report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons discussing anaplastic large-cell lymphoma. (To read the report, click here.) Naturally, they are concerned. 

I only use smooth, not textured, breast implants 

To reassure all of my patients with breast implants, as well as those who are considering getting breast implants, I want to state very clearly: 

I have always used ONLY smooth implants for my breast augmentation patients, not the textured ones cited in these two sources. The recent concerns do not involve these types of implants and my breast augmentation patients do NOT need to be concerned about this.

When I am asked if breast implants are safe, my answer is yes
