Have you always wanted bigger breasts than the ones you were born with? Or, have you have a mastectomy and are considering reconstructive surgery with breast implants?

Before deciding to have breast augmentation, it is very important to make sure your plastic surgeon is qualified to perform this highly specialized surgery. He/she should be board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and be a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons as well as the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. In addition, your surgeon should be very experienced in performing this procedure, i.e., not “practicing” on you and your breasts.

Recently, many women around the world, including a number of my patients, have become concerned to learn that textured breast implants made by Allergan that have been linked to an unusual type of cancer are being recalled in the United States at the request of the Food and Drug Administration. These textured implants will also be recalled globally.

According to an announcement by the FDA, the recall concerns Allergan’s BIOCELL textured breast implants and tissue expanders. You can read the FDA announcement here. 

I only use smooth, not textured, breast implants in my practice

I've been performing breast implant surgery for over 20 years.

And during all that time, I have encountered very few complications in my patients as a result of this surgery. In fact, for women who want larger breasts, or want the size and shape of their breasts to match, or want breast reconstruction following a mastectomy, breast implants are a safe, long-lasting solution. In the news: reports about the safety of breast implants 

Like many of my patients, you may have read or heard about the recently-released FDA reports of medical device performance, including breast implants. Here's my response:

I welcome the release of these reports and feel strongly that more transparency and information is better for both surgeons and patients to be able to make the most informed decisions.

Are breast implants safe? My answer is yes.

In over 20 years of performing breast implant surgery in my plastic surgery practice, I have encountered very few complications in my patients as a result. For women who want larger breasts, who want the size and shape of their breasts to match, or who have had a mastectomy and want breast reconstruction, breast implants are a highly satisfying, long-lasting solution. In the last few days, I have heard from a few of my patients who read a recent article in The New York Times stating that breast implants made by Allergan that have a textured or slightly roughened surface, rather than a smooth covering, have been linked to a rare form of cancer called breast implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma and are being taken off the market in Europe. 

There has also been a recent report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons discussing anaplastic large-cell lymphoma. (To read the report, click here.) Naturally, they are concerned.
