When it comes to breast size, many people assume that women only want to go larger. However, in my plastic surgery practice many patients come to me wanting their breasts to be smaller. Very large breasts, especially on small-framed women, can cause a lot of physical discomfort: neck pain, back pain, indentions on the shoulders from heavy straps, skin rashes and problems with exercise.

Overly large breasts can also make it hard to find properly fitting clothing and bathing suits, and for many women, can make them uncomfortably self-conscious. If this sounds familiar to you, breast reduction surgery might be the welcome relief you’ve been looking for.

You may have read or heard in the news that the breast implant manufacturer Allergan has recalled its textured breast implants, here in the U.S. and around the world. A July 2019 statement from the FDA explains the recall:

To protect individuals from the increased risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), associated with Allergan BIOCELL textured breast implants, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requested that Allergan recall its BIOCELL textured breast implants and tissue expanders. Allergan agreed and is removing these products from the global market.

(FYI: BIA-ALCL is not breast cancer. It is a type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which is cancer of the immune system.)

What is a “gummy” breast implant?

One of the joys of being a plastic surgeon is being able to give women the size and shape breasts they desire. For some, this means larger breasts (breast augmentation). There are two general types of breast implants: textured and smooth. In my plastic surgery practice, I only use smooth implants but some plastic surgeons, especially in Europe, have used textured implants that have recently been recalled in the United States and worldwide. All breast implants are not the same, from their size to what they’re filled with

The size of a breast implant is determined by several factors, says the Natrelle website. These include:

• The height and width of the implant
• Your side profile, or the distance the implant projects from your body
• The volume or number of cc’s of silicone or saline within the implant
