What is a “gummy” breast implant?

One of the joys of being a plastic surgeon is being able to give women the size and shape breasts they desire. For some, this means larger breasts (breast augmentation). For others, it means smaller breasts (breast reduction) or reconstructed ones following a mastectomy (breast reconstruction). Recent concerns about textured breast implants

There are two general types of breast implants: textured and smooth. In my plastic surgery practice, I only use smooth implants but some plastic surgeons, especially in Europe, have used textured implants that have recently been recalled in the United States and worldwide. One of the most satisfying aspects about being a plastic surgeon is being able to help patients feel better about themselves and their bodies. This is often achieved by body enhancing surgery, such as a Brazilian butt lift, Mommy Makeover, breast augmentation, tummy tuck or liposuction. Yet these days, the body shaping procedure that more and more of my patients are asking for is a breast lift. And they’re not alone. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast lifts have grown 70% since 2000, outpacing breast implants 2-to-1.

As you may have heard, textured breast implants made by Allergan have been linked to a rare type of cancer and have recently been recalled in the United States and worldwide. What is a breast lift and what will it do?

Have your breasts begun to droop and sag? Are they a lot lower than they used to be? Do you wish they were higher, fuller and younger-looking? Like many of my patients, you might want to consider a breast lift, a surgical procedure that significantly improves the appearance of your breasts. In addition, by lifting and re-positioning your breasts, a breast lift helps you look and feel more attractive and more feminine, both undressed and in clothing, and more self-confident about your body.

Recently, you may have heard or read that textured breast implants made by Allergan have been linked to a rare and sometimes fatal cancer known as breast implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). Because of this link, Allergan voluntarily recalled its textured breast implants this past summer.

The cancer, a form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, can reside in the scar tissue and fluid near the breast implant and spread throughout the body, compromising the immune system. The exact cause of the lymphoma is unknown, but researchers suspect that the textured surfaces of the breast implants allow potentially harmful bacteria to grow in the shell’s nooks and crannies. Textured breast implants account for less than 10% of breast implants in the U.S. but more than 80% in other parts of the world.

To put my patients’ minds at ease, I want to clearly state that I only use smooth breast implants, not textured ones, in my practice
