What Happens During Liposuction Surgery?

What Happens During Liposuction Surgery?

It’s easy to get discouraged when you exercise and eat sensibly and yet still have stubborn fat pockets that won’t go away. Liposuction can help reduce even the most resistant fat deposits, giving you the trim, curvy, desirable body you’ve always dreamed about. Liposuction is just one of the many ways I can help you achieve a more beautiful body. To learn more, click here.

Liposuction: big decision, amazing results

Deciding to have liposuction is an important decision and should not be taken lightly. If you are considering this procedure, please contact me for a free consultation where you will hear about all your options. I have performed hundreds of liposuction surgeries with outstanding results and would personally like to help you achieve the beautiful body you’ve been wanting.

Are you a good candidate for liposuction?

In order to be considered a good candidate for this plastic surgery procedure, you should be in good overall physical health and maintain a routine of regular exercise and proper diet. Liposuction tends to work best on smaller areas of fat, so you should be somewhat close to your ideal weight at the time of your procedure. This surgery is not a substitute for other weight loss strategies and is not designed for patients who are overweight or obese.

2 types of liposuction

  1. Tumescent liposuction. With this technique, a plastic surgeon will inject a solution into your fatty areas before removing any fat. This solution is made up of saline, lidocaine anesthetic, and epinephrine (which contracts your blood vessels) and enables the fat to be extracted more easily, helps decrease blood loss, and eases pain during and after surgery.

  2. Laser-Assisted Liposuction (SmartLipo). Using advanced laser technology, SmartLipo liquefies fat by producing a burst of energy as the laser enters the fatty tissue. This energy is delivered by a thin laser fiber that is inserted through small incisions in the skin. Laser-assisted liposuction also stimulates collagen production in the skin, which may in turn offer additional skin-tightening benefits.

What happens during liposuction surgery

Depending on the type of liposuction you are having, you may be able to have it done at your plastic surgeon’s office or surgery center and go home the same day. Before the procedure starts, you will be given an anesthetic. Depending on how much fat is being extracted and the type of liposuction being done, you may get local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, your surgeon will make small incisions in the area to be treated, insert a suction device inside the incision, and extract excess fat using a suction pump or a large syringe. How long it takes depends on how much fat is being extracted.

Liposuction can be performed at the same time as other plastic surgery procedures for even more satisfying results

Some of my patients choose to have liposuction performed on its own, while others combine it with other body sculpting procedures such as a faceliftbreast augmentationtummy tuckMommy Makeover or lower body lift in order to achieve the results they want in time for swimsuit season. NOTE: If you're interested in decreasing fat throughout your entire body and trimming and tightening several areas, this will likely take multiple procedures.

Is liposuction safe?

When asked this question, my answer is that with any procedure there are some risks involved, but if you’re healthy, without medical problems, a non-smoker, you’re in good shape, and you’re having the procedure done in the right location with the right surgeon, this procedure can be done very safely.

Insurance coverage

Insurance companies consider liposuction to be elective cosmetic surgery and usually do not cover it, which means the procedure would be self-pay.
