What Areas of the Body Does Liposuction Work Best On?

What Areas of the Body Does Liposuction Work Best On?

For several of my patients, choosing to have liposuction to permanently eliminate flabby bulges and pockets of fat that diet and exercise have not been able to erase is a real turning point for them, even beyond the physical aspects. Yes, they look and feel younger, slimmer and more energetic...but also more confident about their bodies and themselves.

As an added bonus, having liposuction is often the motivation they need to commit to a healthier lifestyle and let go of bad habits, such as smoking and overeating. For many women and also many men, liposuction is truly transformational.

In addition to liposuction, I offer a complete range of body shaping procedures which you can learn about here.

No matter which type of plastic surgery procedure my patients are considering, I firmly believe that the best patient is an informed patient. It's important to me that before you have a procedure, you have all the information you need to make the decision that's right for you.

That's why I like providing short videos where I briefly explain a certain body sculpting procedure—in this case, liposuction. You can read below what I talk about or you can watch my video by clicking here or on the image below.

Where can we perform liposuction?

Where does it work best? Where does it work at all? Starting from head to toe:

  • In the right patient, we can do liposuction in the chin and neck area. This tends to be younger patients in their 20s or early 30s who have good quality skin with a nice elasticity to it, so that when we reduce the fat that’s between the skin and the muscles in the neck, we can get the skin to shrink back nicely.

  • Moving down the body, we do liposuction on the back of the arms where the skin hangs a little bit. If the skin is in good shape, we can significantly reduce the circumference of the arms.

  • In front of the arm pits, where the bra digs.

  • In the chest walls, the sides of the breasts.

  • Also in the chest walls we do gynecomastia, which is reduction of male breast tissue.

  • The stomach is an obvious and traditional place for liposuction.

  • Bra rolls, back rolls, love handles, inner thighs, outer thighs, even sometimes calfs and ankles…all of these we can improve with liposuction.

Where we don’t do liposuction

  • We don’t typically perform liposuction on the face: lower eyelids, upper eyelids, cheeks…those aren’t really amenable to this procedure.

  • Lipomas which are benign fatty growths really don’t work terribly well with liposuction because if you don’t remove them all, they tend to come back.

Most places will do well with liposuction

Most areas of the body where there is extra fat can be successfully treated with liposuction, although liposuction alone may or may not be the appropriate therapy. It depends on how much fat there is, how much loose skin there is, and the quality of that skin.

The quantity and quality of the skin will really determine whether liposuction, or maybe liposuction with lasers (SmartLipo), is the best solution. If a lot of skin needs to be removed, I might recommend a tummy tuck rather than just liposuction on its own because with a large amount of skin to eliminate, liposuction won’t be successful — the skin is just going to sag. So it really depends on a number of factors, all very patient-dependent.

It’s a decision based on each individual patient

When a patient comes in to talk to me about liposuction, we sit down, I do an examination, and I can tell pretty quickly whether or not this is something liposuction is going to fix or whether we need to consider some other techniques.

For even better results, consider combining liposuction with other body sculpting procedures

For even more dramatic results, liposuction can be combined with a number of other body sculpting procedures such as breast augmentationfacelifttummy tuck, Mommy Makeover or lower body lift. Note that if you're interested in reducing fat throughout your entire body, this will likely take multiple procedures.

I perform liposuction at the Surgical Specialty Center of Westchester

For almost every plastic surgery procedure I perform, including liposuction, I use the Surgical Specialty Center of Westchester. Located in Harrison, NY, the Surgical Specialty Center has four operating rooms and an 11-bed recovery room. Each operating room is fully equipped with state-of-the-art anesthesia (provided by a board-certified anesthesiologist), emergency equipment and everything else I and my surgical team need to provide the highest standard of care to each one of our patients. How much does liposuction cost?

Because everyone’s body is unique and the amount and location of fat to be removed with liposuction varies from person to person, the exact cost of this procedure is determined after I have met with the patient and together, we have decided how many areas of the body are good candidates for liposuction in order to achieve the best possible results.

Insurance coverage

Insurance companies consider liposuction to be elective cosmetic surgery and therefore is usually not covered by insurance, meaning that patients pay the entire cost themselves.
