Are you a good candidate for liposuction? Here’s what I say to my patients who are considering this type of body contouring procedure: If you’re currently in fairly good shape, you exercise, and you have a few areas of your body that you want trimmed and sculpted, liposuction may be for you. However, liposuction is not a weight loss program, so I don’t recommend it to those patients who want to lose a significant amount of weight through plastic surgery.
By changing your body, liposuction can also change your life
For many of my patients, permanently eliminating stubborn pockets of fat and bulges that diet and exercise have not been able to erase helps them look and feel younger, slimmer, more energetic...and more beautiful. For others, having liposuction is the motivation they need to commit to a healthier lifestyle and let go of bad habits, such as smoking and overeating.
Whatever the reason, liposuction can be a wonderful turning point in a person’s life, boosting their self-esteem and enabling them to feel confident about their bodies, sometimes for the first time.
To help you understand liposuction and what it could do for you, I’ve made a short 45-second video explaining how it works. You can read a summary of what I talk about (below) or you can watch the video by clicking on the image below.
Liposuction: permanently takes away fat cells
With liposuction, we remove areas of fat and fat cells that have accumulated over time. The fat in your body doesn’t increase the number of fat cells you have, those cells just increase in size as you increase the amount of fat you’re storing.
With liposuction, we remove those fat cells permanently. They’re gone, and they will not recur. They will not come back in those areas where we’ve performed liposuction.
If you gain weight, some of the fat cells in that area will get a little bigger but they won’t come back.
How liposuction works
Liposuction is actually a small surgery. I make a slight incision in the area where fat is to be removed, and using a medical suction device, I suction away your excess fat cells. Once those fat cells are gone, the fat can’t be stored in them.
If you do gain weight after the procedure, the fat cells that were not removed and are still in your body might increase in size, but there are not nearly as many cells to do this as before. Liposuction reduces the number of your fat cells by 80-90%, which is a significant amount.

Liposuction can be performed at the same time as other plastic surgery procedures
Liposuction can successfully be combined with other body sculpting procedures such as breast augmentation, a facelift, tummy tuck, Mommy Makeover or lower body lift. If you're interested in reducing fat throughout your entire body, this will likely take multiple procedures.
How much does liposuction cost?
Because every person’s body is unique and the amount and location of fat to be removed through liposuction vary from person to person, the exact cost of surgery is usually determined by a plastic surgeon after he or she has met with the patient and together, they have decided which and how many areas of the body are good candidates for liposuction in order to achieve the best possible results.
