Are breast implants something you’ve been thinking about? If so, I recommend breast augmentation surgery as a safe, long-term way to get the breast size you’ve always wanted. For many of my patients, breast implants help them feel sexier, more attractive and more feminine. For others, breast implants correct breast misalignment, breasts that never developed, the loss of breasts after surgery, or a number of other issues.
For all of them, however, breast augmentation can be a wonderful turning point in their lives, enabling them to have a positive body image, sometimes for the first time. In addition to breast augmentation, I offer a complete range of breast procedures which you can learn about here.
Top 10 reasons women get breast implants
There are a variety of reasons why women want larger, fuller breasts. If you’re considering getting breast implants, here are some of the most common reasons why women decide to have breast enhancement.
- They want to boost their self-esteem.
Having larger, fuller breasts enables many women to feel more attractive, alluring and self-assured. Many of my patients also tell me they like the way clothes fit across their new bust, especially bathing suits and lingerie.
- They have disproportionately small breasts.
Women with abnormally small breasts are often embarrassed about their appearance, especially when naked. Small-breasted patients often tell me they feel inadequate as a woman because of their small chest. In many cases, breast implants can not only give them a fuller bust but much-needed self-confidence.
- One breast is larger than the other.
Many women have asymmetrical breasts as a result of uneven estrogen levels, growth spurts during puberty, and other factors, all of which can negatively impact their image of themselves. Breast implants can even out their bust line, making them feel more feminine and “normal.”
- They have recently lost a lot of weight.
After significant weight loss, many women discover that their breasts are much less full than they used to be and have become saggy. Breast implants can bring back their fuller chest while retaining their trim waistline and healthy weight.
- Their breasts changed shape following pregnancy.
Losing baby weight is a good thing for most women, but some find that after pregnancy and nursing, their breasts droop and/or get significantly smaller. Breast implants are a great way to restore their pre-baby body. (NOTE: If a woman becomes pregnant again, breast implants will not impact the health of the baby or her ability to nurse.)
- They have had a mastectomy.
Women who have a mastectomy due to breast cancer or a serious health condition often are eager to regain their femininity and feel whole again. Breast reconstruction and augmentation with implants can achieve this very important goal.
- They want to improve their sex life.
Women who get breast implants typically experience higher levels of sexual arousal and satisfaction, as well as an overall feeling of being sexier.
- Their clothes will fit better.
Most women's clothes are designed for a size C cup. By increasing the breast size, most women feel not only more attractive but better proportioned in clothing, leading to a better fit.
- They want to look younger.
As they age, many women notice their breasts sagging and getting smaller. Breast implants, especially when combined with a breast lift, can restore a fresh, youthful look to their figures.
- They have educated themselves about the procedure and are confident about their decision.
Having breast implants is a highly personal decision, and should not be taken lightly. Women should never get breast implants to please someone else or to meet another person's expectations. However, for women who carefully think through their decision, breast implants can have a positive, substantial impact on their lives.
I offer three types of breast implants, all of them safe
There are three types of breast implants available in the United States today, all three of which I use:
- Silicone breast implants that are filled with silicone gel
- Saline breast implants that are filled with saline (sterile saltwater)
- Structured, saline-filled implants that combine silicone gel and saline
Most women—and most plastic surgeons, myself included—prefer the look and feel of silicone or structured implants (rather than saline). Both of these are generally considered to look and feel more like real breast tissue, while saline implants are more prone to cause rippling of the skin. I've written a blog explaining the differences in breast implants which you can read here.
What is involved in breast augmentation surgery
I perform breast augmentation procedures at the Surgical Specialty Center located in Harrison, NY. Each of the Center’s four operating rooms is fully equipped with state-of-the-art anesthesia (provided by a board certified anesthesiologist), emergency equipment and everything else I need to provide excellent care to each of my patients.
Breast augmentation surgery involves surgically inserting an implant filled with either silicone or saline behind each breast. The most common site for the incision through which the implant will be inserted is in the crease just underneath the breast. It can also be performed around the areola. The incision is very small and inconspicuous in these locations.
Typically, a pocket is created for the implant behind the muscle between your breast and chest wall. Placing the implant behind the muscle creates a very natural appearance and makes it easier for you to obtain accurate mammograms in the future and reduces the risk of capsular contracture.
How much do breast implants cost?
One of the first questions my patients ask me when they’re considering getting breast implants is how much the surgery will cost. My answer is that there is not one standard price. Every woman’s breasts are unique, and the results she is seeking from breast augmentation surgery are specific to her. That’s why I determine the exact cost of the procedure after I have met with the patient, evaluated her breasts and body type, her overall physical condition and her personal goals and expectations. Then together, we will decide what type of procedure will achieve the best possible results.
