One of the most satisfying aspects about being a plastic surgeon is being able to help patients feel better about themselves and their bodies. Together, we can achieve this by any number of body enhancing surgeries, such a Brazilian butt lift, Mommy Makeover, breast augmentation, tummy tuck or liposuction.
Yet recently, the procedure that more and more of my patients are asking for is a breast lift. And they’re not alone. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast lifts have grown 70% since 2000, outpacing breast implants 2-to-1. Breast implants are still by far the most performed cosmetic surgery in women, the ASPS reports, but breast lifts are steadily gaining, with most patients being between the ages of 30-54. "Many women are looking for a youthful breast by using the tissue they already have," says ASPS President Robert X. Murphy, Jr., MD.
Could this type of cosmetic surgery benefit you too?
Have your breasts begun to droop and sag as you’ve had children and time has passed? Do your nipples now point downward rather than straight ahead or upward? Would you like to once again have breasts that look uplifted, attractive and youthful? If so, a breast lift can be a very effective solution. In addition to this type of breast surgery, I offer a full range of other breast procedures that can help you achieve the breast size and shape you desire. To learn more, click here.
3 most common reasons why women choose breast lift surgery
Here are the top 3 reasons why women decide to have a breast lift:
1) To restore a better breast shape and overall appearance following pregnancy and breastfeeding. Pregnancy often causes breasts to stretch and sag. A breast lift, either with or without implants, can help undo these changes and restore a more youthful, attractive bust.
2) To improve breast contour after significant weight loss. Losing a lot of weight often means losing breast volume. By removing excess skin and tightening the remaining breast tissue, a breast lift can help restore a more proportional, youthful breast shape.
3) To have perky breasts again (or for the first time). Some of my patients have had drooping breasts since their teens. Breast lift surgery can help them achieve the breast shape and fullness they have always wanted.
Many positive benefits of breast lift surgery
Having a breast lift can dramatically change not only the way you feel about yourself as a woman but how you look in bathing suits and lingerie, the type of clothes you want to wear, and the way you’re perceived by others. What I hear from my patients who have had a breast lift is that it was a very positive turning point in their lives, helping them feel younger, sexier and more confident.
What breast lift surgery won't do
A breast lift does not significantly change the size of your breasts or round out the upper part of your breast. If you want larger, fuller breasts, consider having breast augmentation at the same time as a breast lift. If you want smaller breasts, you might want to combine a breast lift with breast reduction surgery.
What happens during a breast lift procedure?
A breast lift is a surgical procedure that raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast silhouette. Rather than making breasts larger, a breast lift reshapes and repositions breasts that have sagged and dropped as a result of pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, age, gravity or heredity. Sometimes the areola (the pink skin surrounding the nipple) becomes enlarged over time; a breast lift can reduce this as well.
During the procedure, a plastic surgeon moves the nipple and areola to a higher position, repositions the breast tissue to a higher level, removes excess skin from the lower portion of the breast, and reshapes the remaining breast skin. A variety of incision patterns are possible, depending on the desired results and the correction needed. In most cases, breast and nipple sensation can be preserved.
