A large, round, sexy derrière is something many women desire, more these days than ever in fact, but something that few are born with in the proportions they want. A Brazilian butt lift (also called butt augmentation or BBL) is an excellent way to achieve the fuller, firmer, curvier butt they’ve always wanted. And one of the best, and safest, aspects about a BBL is that it uses your own fat so there’s no chance of rejection. As well as the Brazilian butt lift, I also offer a wide range of other body sculpting procedures that can help you achieve a firmer, more shapely, younger-looking body. To learn more, click here.
Are you a good candidate for a Brazilian butt lift? Here’s how to know
You might be a good candidate for a BBL if you:
- Have lost a significant amount of weight and your butt now sags and droops.
- Are overweight and haven't been able to lose weight through physical activity or changes in your diet.
- Are at a normal weight but want to dramatically improve the appearance of your lower body.
- Are at a normal weight but your skin won't contract after liposuction due to poor elasticity related to aging.
- Are not very thin. Underweight patients may not have enough excess body fat to extract and re-position in the buttocks area.
- Are unhappy with the overall shape and lack of firmness of your butt.
- Are in good physical health.
- Are in a good mental/emotional state.
- Have a positive outlook and realistic expectations.
- Do not smoke or drink excessively.
- Do not have any heart conditions, lung conditions or neurological disorders.
Are Brazilian butt lifts safe? This short video explains
As a plastic surgeon who has been performing this body contouring surgery for over 20 years, I can confidently say that yes, if done properly, in the right setting, in the right patients, this procedure is safe. In order to avoid any negative outcomes for my patients, I perform all of my surgeries at the Surgical Specialty Center of Westchester, a leading-edge, state-of-the-art facility in Harrison, NY.

What to expect during the procedure
During the procedure, I use liposuction to vacuum thin layers of fat from areas of your body that have excess fat deposits (usually the thighs, flanks or abdomen). This extracted fat is then processed and injected, or grafted, into the buttocks in layers to produce the desired contour and fullness. Approximately 50% of the injected fat is reabsorbed, which is why when I perform this surgery, I exaggerate the original fat transfer to account for this. In order to have this body sculpting procedure, you must have an ample amount of excess fat in other parts of your body that can be extracted and then injected into your buttocks.
Following the procedure, special compression garments are typically worn for several weeks to help reduce swelling and to help shape the butt. Patients usually can go back to work about one week after the procedure. What seems to work well for my patients who work at a desk is to sit with their weight on their thighs and not their buttocks, using a Boppy pillow.
Should you gain or lose weight before the procedure?
While it varies from person to person, you should be a few pounds over your ideal weight before having BBL surgery. The important factor is that once you have gained weight for a BBL, you need to maintain that same weight afterwards in order to maintain the results.
Is a BBL covered by insurance?
Generally speaking, Brazilian butt lift surgery is considered to be an elective cosmetic procedure, meaning that it is not covered by insurance.
