Are You A Good Candidate For Breast Augmentation?

Are You A Good Candidate For Breast Augmentation?

If you want larger, fuller breasts, breast implants are a safe, highly successful way to get the breast size you’ve always wanted. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation is the top cosmetic surgery performed today. This comes as no surprise because whether it’s increasing a woman’s breast size, getting her breasts to match, or performing breast reconstruction, breast implant surgery is the most common plastic surgery procedure I perform in my practice.

For my patients who choose to have breast implants, it can be a wonderful turning point in their lives, boosting their self-esteem, body image and sexual satisfaction, and I am pleased that I can help achieve these positive outcomes for them. Very often after performing breast augmentation surgery, my patients actually say to me, “I love my new breasts! I'm so glad I did this!”

Before deciding if a patient is a good candidate for breast implants, I take into consideration:

  • her body type
  • her age
  • the current size of her breasts
  • the breast size she would like to be

Many reasons to have breast implant surgery

1. Implants correct breasts that never developed.

For some young women, their breasts never develop (a condition called micromastia). One patient told me, “I looked like a teenage boy.” Breast implants allowed her to feel more feminine and sexy, and enabled her to confidently wear clothing that accented her new curves.

2. They correct asymmetrical breasts.

Many women’s breasts do not match in some way, either in size or shape. One breast might be a D cup, while the other is a B. In some cases, women truly feel they have a deformity. The positive effect breast implants can have on their self-confidence is amazing.

3. They restore pre-pregnancy and pre-breastfeeding shape and size.

“I want my breasts back," is something I hear a lot from moms. Implants not only restore the shape and fullness these women had before childbearing but also the positive, feminine way they feel about themselves.

4. They restore a woman’s breasts after a mastectomy.

Women who have had a mastectomy due to breast cancer or other serious health condition often want to “feel whole again.” Breast reconstruction and augmentation can achieve this very important goal for them.

5. They often lead to a healthier lifestyle.

For many women, the preparation for breast implant surgery encourages them to switch to a healthier lifestyle. Many of my breast augmentation patients get into a vitamin regimen, quit smoking, start working out, de-clutter their homes, and overall, commit to being healthier.

Three types of breast implants

There are three types of breast implants available in the United States today:

  • Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel
  • Saline breast implants are filled with saline (sterile saltwater)
  • New structured, saline-filled implant (Ideal Implant) that combines the natural look and feel of silicone gel with the safety and peace of mind of saline (not eligible for my special pricing)

Most women (and most plastic surgeons, myself included) prefer the look and feel of structured or silicone implants, both of which are generally considered to be more like real breast tissue. Saline implants are more prone to cause rippling of the skin.

Are breast implants safe?

Silicone: In 1992, the FDA restricted the use of silicone breast implants and allowed only women having breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery to get them. For the next 14 years, women who wanted breast augmentation could only receive saline breast implants. In 2006, after reviewing research and finding no connection between silicone implants and disease, the FDA once again approved the sale of silicone breast implants.

Saline: If the implant shell leaks, a saline implant will simply collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body.

Structured: Approved by the FDA and Health Canada in 2014, the structured, saline-filled IDEAL IMPLANT has undergone 10 years of development, testing and refinement, including the clinical expertise of numerous plastic surgeons.

What is involved in breast augmentation surgery?

I perform breast augmentation procedures at the Surgical Specialty Center located in Harrison, NY. Each of the Center’s four operating rooms is fully equipped with state-of-the-art anesthesia (provided by a board certified anesthesiologist), emergency equipment and everything else I need to provide excellent care to each of my patients.

Breast augmentation surgery involves surgically inserting an implant filled with either silicone or saline (sterile saltwater) solution behind each breast. The most common site for the incision through which the implant will be inserted is in the crease just underneath the breast. It can also be performed around the areola. The incision is very small and inconspicuous in these locations.

Typically, a pocket is created for the implant behind the muscle between your breast and chest wall. Placing the implant behind the muscle creates a very natural appearance and makes it easier for you to obtain accurate mammograms in the future and reduces the risk of capsular contracture.

If it has been a few years (or more) since your breast augmentation surgery, it’s important to get them checked. I highly recommend doing this once a year. Please make an appointment to come in and see me so I can check for any problems.
