Are Breast Implants Right For You?

Are Breast Implants Right For You?

If you've always wanted larger breasts, or if you'd like your two breasts to match, or if you've had a mastectomy and are seeking breast reconstruction, or for a number of other reasons, breast augmentation could be the solution you’ve been looking for. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast implant surgery is the top cosmetic surgery performed today.

For many women, breast implants help them feel sexier, younger, more voluptuous...more feminine. For others, breast implants correct breast misalignment, breasts that never developed, the absence of breasts after surgery, or some other issue. But for all of these women, breast augmentation can be a wonderful turning point in their lives, boosting their self-esteem and enabling them to have a positive body image, sometimes for the first time. Why do women choose to have breast implants? It’s not always for bigger breasts.

There are a variety of reasons why women want larger, fuller breasts. If you’re considering getting breast implants, here are some of the most common reasons women decide to have breast augmentation surgery so that you are more able to make an informed decision.

  1. They want to boost their self-esteem.

Having larger, fuller breasts makes many women feel more attractive, alluring and self-assured. For many of my patients, having larger breasts boosts their self-esteem and makes them feel more feminine than ever before.

  1. They have disproportionately small breasts.

Women with abnormally small breasts (micromastia) are often embarrassed about their appearance, especially when naked. In fact, small-breasted patients often tell me that they feel less desirable or attractive. Breast implants not only give them a fuller bust but an important boost in self-confidence.

  1. One breast is larger than the other.

Many women have asymmetrical breasts as a result of uneven estrogen levels, growth spurts during puberty and other factors, all of which can have a big impact on their appearance and self-confidence. Breast implants can even out their bust line, making them feel more “normal”.

  1. They have recently lost a lot of weight.

Following significant weight loss, many women discover that their breasts are no longer full and plump. Breast implants give them a fuller chest while retaining their trim waistline and healthy weight.

  1. Their breasts changed shape following pregnancy.

Losing baby weight is a good thing for most women, but some find that after pregnancy and nursing, their breasts droop and/or get significantly smaller. Breast implants are a great way to restore their pre-baby body. (NOTE: If a woman becomes pregnant again, breast implants will not impact the health of the baby or her ability to nurse.)

  1. They have had a mastectomy.

Women who have a mastectomy due to breast cancer or other serious health condition often are eager to regain their femininity and feel whole again. Breast reconstruction and augmentation can achieve this very important goal.

  1. They want to boost their sex life.

Women who get breast implants typically experience higher levels of sexual arousal and satisfaction, as well as an overall feeling of being sexier.

  1. Their clothes will fit better.

Most women's clothes are designed for a size C cup. By increasing a woman’s breast size, she can feel more attractive and better proportioned in her clothing.

  1. They want to look younger.

As they age, many women notice their breasts sagging and getting smaller. Breast implants, especially when combined with a breast lift, can restore a fresh, youthful look to their figures.

  1. They have educated themselves about the procedure and are confident about their decision.

Having breast implants is a highly personal decision, and should not be taken lightly. Women should never get breast implants to please someone else or to meet another person's expectations. However, for women who carefully think through their decision, breast implants can have a positive, substantial impact on their lives.

I offer three types of breast implants, all of them safe

  1. Silicone breast implants—filled with silicone gel.
  2. Saline breast implants—filled with saline (sterile saltwater).
  3. Natrelle® gummy breast implants—filled with silicone gel. Choose from five profiles (low to extra full), four degrees of fullness (minimal to maximum) and three levels of cohesivity (gumminess).

Most women—and most plastic surgeons, myself included—prefer the look and feel of silicone implants rather than saline. Silicone implants are generally considered to look and feel more like real breast tissue, while saline implants are more prone to cause rippling of the skin. Women are also reporting high satisfaction rates with the new gummy versions because they can choose the size and shape of their implants for a more customized, unique look.

What is involved in breast augmentation surgery?

I perform breast augmentation procedures at the Surgical Specialty Center located in Harrison, NY. Each of the Center’s four operating rooms is fully equipped with state-of-the-art anesthesia (provided by a board certified anesthesiologist), emergency equipment and everything else I need to provide excellent care to each of my patients.

Breast augmentation surgery involves surgically inserting an implant filled with either silicone or saline (sterile saltwater) solution behind each breast. The most common site for the incision through which the implant will be inserted is in the crease just underneath the breast. It can also be performed around the areola. The incision is very small and inconspicuous in these locations.

Typically, a pocket is created for the implant behind the muscle between your breast and chest wall. Placing the implant behind the muscle creates a very natural appearance and makes it easier for you to obtain accurate mammograms in the future and reduces the risk of capsular contracture.
