Are breast implants something you’ve been thinking about getting, maybe for several years? Women get breast implants for a variety of reasons

There are many reasons why women might want larger, fuller breasts. So that you can make an informed decision, here are some of the most common reasons women choose breast enhancement.

1. To boost their self-esteem.

Having bigger breasts enables many women to feel more attractive, feminine and self-assured. Many of my patients also tell me they like the way their new bust fills up clothes, especially bathing suits and lingerie.

2. They have disproportionately small breasts.

Women with abnormally small breasts are often embarrassed about their appearance, especially when naked. Small-breasted patients often tell me they feel inadequate as a woman because of their small chest. In many cases, breast implants can not only give them a fuller bust but much-needed self-confidence.

3. One breast is larger than the other.

Many women have asymmetrical breasts as a result of uneven estrogen levels, growth spurts during puberty, and other factors, all of which can negatively impact their image of themselves. Breast implants can even out their bust so that their breasts match, making them feel more normal and attractive.

4. They have recently lost a lot of weight.

After significant weight loss, many women discover that their breasts are much less full than they used to be and have become saggy. Breast implants can bring back a fuller bust while retaining a trim waistline and healthy weight.

5. Their breasts changed shape following pregnancy.

Losing baby weight is a good thing for most women, but some find that after pregnancy and nursing, their breasts drooped and/or got significantly smaller. Breast implants are an excellent way to restore their pre-baby breast size, shape and fullness. (NOTE: If a woman becomes pregnant again, breast implants will not impact the health of the baby or her ability to breastfeed.)

6. They have had a mastectomy.

Women who have a mastectomy due to breast cancer or a serious health condition often are eager to regain their femininity and feel whole again. Breast reconstruction and augmentation with implants can achieve this very important goal.

7. They want to improve their sex life.

Women who get breast implants typically experience higher levels of sexual arousal and satisfaction, as well as an overall feeling of being sexier.

8. Their clothes will fit better.

Most women's clothes are designed for a size C cup. By increasing their breast size, most women feel not only more attractive but better proportioned in clothing, leading to a better fit and greater self-esteem.

9. They want to look younger.

As they age, many women notice their breasts sagging and getting smaller. Breast implants, especially when combined with a breast lift, can restore a vibrant, youthful look to their figures.

10. They have educated themselves about the procedure and are confident about their decision.

Having breast implants is a highly personal decision, and should not be taken lightly. Women should never get breast implants to please someone else or to meet another person's expectations. However, for women who carefully think through their decision, breast implants can truly have a positive, substantial impact on their lives.

I offer three types of breast implants, all of them safe

• Silicone breast implants—filled with silicone gel.
• Saline breast implants—filled with saline (sterile saltwater).
• Natrelle® gummy breast implants—filled with silicone gel. Choose from five profiles (low to extra full), four degrees of fullness (minimal to maximum) and three levels of cohesivity (gumminess).

Most women—and most plastic surgeons, myself included—prefer the look and feel of silicone implants (rather than saline). Both of these are generally considered to look and feel more like real breast tissue, while saline implants are more prone to cause rippling of the skin. Women are also reporting high satisfaction rates with the new gummy versions because they can choose the size and shape of their implants for a more customized, unique look.

How much do breast implants cost?

One of the first questions my patients ask me when they’re considering getting breast implants is how much the surgery will cost. My answer is that there is not one standard price. Every woman’s breasts are unique, and the results she is seeking from breast augmentation surgery are specific to her. That’s why I determine the exact cost of the procedure after I have met with the patient, evaluated her breasts and body type, her overall physical condition and her personal goals and expectations. Then together, we will decide what type of procedure will achieve the best possible results.
