Would you like to look years younger, but without surgery or facial scars? Now you can, with Botox, one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed today. Botox is very popular with a large number of my patients. After a treatment, they often tell me how happy they are, not only with how much younger it makes them look, but how much younger it makes them feel.
Botox noticeably improves the appearance of moderate to severe crow’s feet lines around the eyes, frown lines around the mouth, and vertical forehead creases between the eyes. In addition, Botox injected into the lower face and neck muscles can improve some of the visible signs of aging in these areas as well.
What is Botox and how does it work?
Although many people think that Botox is a filler that plumps out facial wrinkles, it is actually a protein produced by a bacteria called clostridium botulinum. In the small amounts that physicians use, this protein can safely be injected into a muscle to cause it to relax rather than tighten.
Botox blocks signals between the nerves and the muscles so that the injected muscle cannot contract. Instead, it remains relaxed and soft. This “muscle blocking” is what decreases the appearance of wrinkles, lines and creases. It's important to note, though, that Botox cannot decrease wrinkles caused by gravity or sun exposure, only those wrinkles caused by squinting and/or muscle patterns.
How long does a treatment last?
The effects from Botox usually last 3-4 months. As muscle movement gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to reappear and will need to be treated again. However, these lines and wrinkles often appear less substantial with time because the muscles are being trained to relax.
What does a Botox procedure involve?
Since Botox is a liquid, it is injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with only minor discomfort. The typical Botox procedure takes only a few minutes and does not require any pain-numbing medication. A treatment generally takes 3-7 days to take full effect.
How much does Botox cost?
Because the texture and appearance of every woman’s facial skin is different, and the results she is seeking from Botox are unique to her, the exact cost is determined after I have met with the patient and together, we have decided the number and location of Botox injections that will achieve the best, most natural-looking results.
