Are You A Good Candidate For CoolSculpting?

Are You A Good Candidate For CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive, non-surgical cosmetic procedure that freezes away stubborn fat by gently targeting and cooling unwanted fat cells in the selected area to produce a noticeable, natural-looking reduction of approximately 25% of fat bulges. It is particularly effective in the treatment of sagging fat pockets on the tummy, back, hips, thighs and arms. Unlike most other methods of fat reduction, CoolSculpting involves no needles, surgery or “downtime.” For more information on CoolSculpting, download our free fact sheet!

However, as I tell my patients who are considering CoolSculpting, this is not a weight-loss treatment. It is designed for people who live active lifestyles, experience minimal weight fluctuations and are looking to target certain areas of their bodies that are stubbornly resistant to exercise and healthy eating habits. CoolSculpting is ideal for patients who only need a small reduction in fat, have no hanging skin, are within 20 pounds of their ideal weight, and do not want surgery in order to achieve a tighter, toner body.

What happens to your fat after CoolSculpting?

When the freezing technology of CoolSculpting is applied to areas of excess fat, the treated fat cells are crystallized, turned into dead cells, and are flushed by the body, leaving you more toned and sculpted. The fat eventually gets excreted through your urine.

How long do the results last?

After a CoolSculpting treatment, the treated fat cells no longer exist and can therefore no longer expand, resulting in the size and occurrence of "trouble spots" being reduced long-term. However, since each contouring treatment reduces only about 20-25% of fat cells, if patients do not continue to eat well and exercise, they can still gain weight in that area due to the remaining 75% of fat cells that can expand. That’s why it’s important not to gain weight after the procedure or the dramatic body contouring results will not be long-lasting.

Should you get pregnant after CoolSculpting, you may need another procedure to restore your initial results. If you’re planning on getting pregnant in the near future, you may want to wait to have CoolSculpting until after you’ve given birth.

What’s the difference between CoolSculpting and liposuction?

CoolSculpting and liposuction are both body contouring procedures, but the treatment that’s right for you depends on your unique body type and desired results.

CoolSculpting is one of the best options for non-surgical fat reduction. It’s non-invasive, leaves no scarring and has no downtime. However, the results are not immediate, becoming evident as soon as 3 weeks following treatment*, with the greatest results occurring over the next 2-4 months*. Also, CoolSculpting can only deliver a 20-30% reduction in fat and may require multiple treatments to reach a patient’s goal.

Liposuction, on the other hand, can deliver dramatic results after just one treatment, depending on the amount of fat the patient wants extracted and from how many areas of the body. Unlike CoolSculpting, liposuction is surgery, carries some risks and causes a certain amount of bruising, scarring and downtime. For more information on liposuction, download our free fact sheet!
